Having a thorough inventory of your home serves many good purposes and ensures that you are able to provide necessary information no matter what.
A household inventory is a detailed record of everything you own, including furniture, appliances, electronics, jewelry, equipment, art, instruments, and more. It's an essential tool for homeowners and renters alike, and it is one of the simplest things you can do to protect yourself financially.
-
In the event of a natural disaster or theft, your insurance company will ask you to prove what you lost. Without documentation, that process can be overwhelming, slow, and costly, and you will not recall everything. A well-maintained inventory means faster claims, fewer disputes, and better peace of mind.
-
An inventory is equally important during major life changes. In a divorce, a clear record of what each person owned before and during the marriage can be critical for fair asset division , reducing conflict and legal costs when emotions are already running high
-
It is also useful for estate planning or moving when having clear lists of all of your belongings is necessary. Whether you're just starting out or have decades of belongings, there's no better time than now to get it documented.

FAQ
1. What should I include in my household inventory?
Document everything of value, including but not limited to, furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, jewelry, collectibles, tools, and sporting equipment. We include the item name, description, approximate value, purchase date, and serial number where applicable. Photos, videos, and supporting documents are great supplements.
2. Do renters need a household inventory?
Absolutely, renters insurance covers your personal belongings, so just as with a homeowner, you will need to show your items and their value in the event of damage or theft. An inventory makes that process much faster and more accurate.
3. Can a household inventory help in a divorce?
Yes. A documented inventory, especially one created before or early in a marriage , can help establish what property each spouse brought into the relationship versus what was acquired jointly, which is often a key question in asset division.
4. Do I need to be present for the Inventory?
You do not need to be our shadow while we create the inventory sheets, however, before we complete a room, we will want to review the information with you, making additions and edits as needed.
5. Do you do the appraisal, too?
We do not actually appraise the value of your property. We can include purchase price and the value that you place on it. We also have local professional appraisers that we can confidently recommend for this component. Art and Jewelry can also be taken to local appraisers. Appraisers then provide documentation to accompany your inventory.
